Route 66 in California

Updated March 10, 2014.

The Ghost Towns

Latest Needles, Old Route 66 diverges from I-40 and is parallel to the path. Some call this the "ghost town", and rightly so. Little Goffs, Essex, Danby and Summit. If you see what's left, off I-40 to US Hwy 95 North, then go west Goffs Road. It is on I-40 near Fenner, where you reach and follow to connect to the National Trails Highway near the town of Essex. I-40

National Trails Highway through Amboy

If you skipped the section of the ghost town off I-40 at Mountain Springs Rd. West of needles. It is soon to change its name to the National Trails Highway, named for the side of the road by the side of Route 66 and before and after the remains of the Mother Road. A rarity in the desert that has little to do with the Route 66 is unusual on the side of the dirt on the north side of the street graffiti. Made of stone, some of which appear to have done was also here that stretches for miles.

In the 1930s, Roy and Velma Crowl include the entire city of Amboy. Today namesake motel sign Roy also points out cheerfully to the old motel, is the middle of a remodel. After nearly steals, the city has a new owner who was able to open the store next door. Just down the road is the Amboy Crater, once a tourist attraction on Route 66. It was 10,000 years since the start, but the desert floor is still full of his black lava.

Other cities were once west of Baghdad Amboy, Siberia and Klondike, but no more. Old Trails Road crosses I-40 near Ludlow and not much to lose if you get there.

Mission San Xavier

Some say the Mission San Xavier is the finest example of mission architecture in the United States, and I will not disagree. After visiting all 21 Spanish missions in California and others in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, I've never seen so beautiful.

Built between 1783 and 1797, the white walls of Mission San Xavier massive increase in the middle of the surrounding desert. Outside there is an elegant Moorish design inspiration and simply white with an ornate entrance.

Inside the Mission colored frescoes radiates covering the altar, walls and vaulted ceiling. Beautiful, if built in every age, is even more fascinating because of their age.

Spanish missionaries built the Mission San Xavier Tohono O'odham Native place called Bac, "place where the water appears" as the Santa Cruz River, the subway is nearby. Father Eusebio Francisco Kino founded the mission here in 1700 and used it as a base to explore the region. Today it is still active in the service of the Tohono O'odham parish church.

Besides small gifts to the mission of the store is a cafe on the ground, and on weekends, you can find someone created under a refuge from the sale of local Fry Bread.

Cortes Bank and the biggest wave ...; California & # 039

Updated March 7, 2014.

Surfers take note. Some of the biggest waves ever assembled not in Hawaii or Australia, which is 100 miles off the coast of Southern California.

Mavericks, turned off the coast of California, near Half Moon Bay, famous among big wave surfers in 1994 when Mark Foo, one of the greatest big wave surfers in the world at the time, his last great waves had never died and in the cold surf Mavericks. Since then, the Mavericks a Mecca for all those. The pleasure of surfing the big waves was The big surf contest at Mavericks wave began in 1999th

But in 2001, the Mavericks measured only 20 feet waves. Huge waves lurk off the southern California coast, 100 miles from San Diego to the Cortes Bank. Here, a young 17-mile underwater mountain range is up to 3 meters below the surface, however at a place called Bishop Rock, Isles of Scilly. This place has to be known masters of vessels and fishermen of the ocean for years. The waves at Cortes Bank warning signs on the rocks under water and are so large that appear on your radar.

For the biggest waves in Cortes Bank requires light winds at low tide, and large storm waves from the north-west, while at the same time, the version of a surfer Pacific "perfect storm". When he arrived at 19 January 2001 California climbed big wave riders to test their skills against the biggest, baddest wave ever ridden, the first time the tow surfers braving the break in the middle of the ocean.

These waves move so fast that people do not catch basins, ask the help of a fearless jet skier pulling a rope until they fast enough to engage the shaft.

As if being chased by a mountain of water, while he is not scary enough towed by a jet ski at 30-40 mph, then it is not the same wavelength. Surfers measure waves in the back and the biggest wave of the day was 30 feet based on your measurements. An observer on the other side of this shaft would be larger than a six-story wall of water more than sixty feet high. The same wave after traveling one hundred miles and reduced to a quarter of its area for surfers Blacks Beach in San Diego reach three hours later.

Mike Parsons won the 2001 Swell / XXL largest in 2001, a wave of 66 meters in Cortes Bank wave. In 2008, he was back to 43 years, residing in San Clemente Parsons won (now Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Price) are mounted at least 70 feet high at the back wall of water competition.

In several interviews, Parsons predicted that someone eventually find and ride a wave 100 meters high at Cortes Bank.

By some as the "new Mavericks" is the Holy Tree Pebble Beach Pescadero Point, the two of the Big Five finalists produced Celebrated rides wave of 2008. In the spring of 2009, which prohibits the use of personal watercraft in the Monterey Bay which includes entry into force of the Holy Tree. It remains to be seen whether the fines deter advantages over the days of big waves or not.

You can track Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards know the latest numbers and see great video of the year contender. Its annual awards ceremony, which will include stopping some great videos competitors aired on ESPN and place live at the Grove in Anaheim, California, in April.
